Testosterone & hormonal load
Lavender oil has been linked to prepubertal gynecomastia in case reports published in the NEJM (Henley et al. 2007). NIEHS researchers confirmed in 2018 that lavender oil components (linalool, linalyl acetate, eucalyptol) inhibit androgen receptor signaling and stimulate estrogen receptor activity in cell models. The risk is most pronounced with daily concentrated topical application, particularly in prepubertal boys. For adult men using products with lavender as a minor fragrance ingredient, the risk is less clear.
